The “Royal Blockheads” FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team at N.B. Clements Junior High School in Prince George County had a successful off-season tournament on May 9 in Fredericksburg.  As part of the winning alliance they received a trophy and were also awarded a certificate for being the “Fastest, Quickest Goal Pushing Robot”.

After a slow start in the qualifying rounds of the tournament, the team was chosen to be in an alliance with first ranked team (CUBIX^3 from Hampstead, MD) and the second ranked team (Geared UP from Ashburn, VA).  The “Cascade Effect” game involved moving the robot around a playing field, putting plastic balls into various sized tubes, and moving those tubes around the field and onto a ramp.  During one of the elimination rounds CUBIX^3 and the Royal Blockheads worked together in the game to earn the highest score of the day – 683 points.

Members of team who were able to attend this tournament were William Auton, Patrick Dennis, and William Kessler.  The rest of the team members who worked on the robot this year were:  Nathan Beiro, Leo Garcia, Maliki Hill,  and Megan Willis.  Their adult coaches were Joe Beiro, Sharon Jadrnak, Matt McAllister, and Dave Pollard.

Prince George County Public Schools started its FIRST robotics teams in 2012.  FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (www.usfirst.org) and is an international robotics competition with programs for elementary through high school students.
