PRINCE GEORGE — The Virginia School Boards Association and Prince George County Public Schools is recognizing February 2015 as School Board Month.

Prince George County Public Schools has five members with each serving a four-year term. Two members are elected from District 1 and three from District 2.

Board meetings are held once each month on the second Monday, with meetings held in the third floor auditorium of the County Government Building.

Meetings are held for (a) review of policy, (b) approval of warrants, (c) approval of personnel, (d) sanction of business actions in relation to district operation, (e) review student disciplinary matters, (f) approves Federal and State plans in relationship to district operation, and (g) reviews school, departmental, and program presentations to stay abreast with changes in the schools.

Additionally, Board members will meet upwards of 80 meetings on (a) student disciplinary issues, (b) budget development, (c) attendance to Virginia School Boards Association seminars, and (d) interaction with Board of Supervisors on Capital Improvement Plan, Budget Development, and other issues.

Each Board member holds a full-time job and routinely works into their business schedule to visit schools and attend events. Interestingly, each School Board member has a unique connection to their position and connection to the community.

One School Board member recently ran and walked in the 5K Walk Against Drugs and Alcohol with his son and you will see him during football season periodically cooking meals for the players (Lewis Stevenson – chairman). Additionally, Stevenson serves on the Rowanty Vocational Technical School Board and Capital Improvement Plan Committee for the county.

Another School Board member coaches a Prince George Parks & Recreation basketball team and serves on the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Board (Jerry Warren – vice chairman).

One School Board member completed the rank of Eagle Scout, served as an interim principal, has taught 45 years in public and post-secondary education, and serves on the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Board (Roger Franklin).

You will find another School Board member serving as an assistant Scout Master in the community, volunteering his time to Prince George Fire & EMS, and serving on the Rowanty Vocational Technical Board (Kevin Foster).

The final School Board member has served on Prince George Fire & EMS; he visits all schools at least twice monthly, and goes behind the scenes to visit support personnel early or late in the day to recognize their work efforts (Bobby Cox).

Prince George County Public Schools is proud to have a School Board with diverse professional talent and spirit of giving back to the community.
