And, although there are many ways people can acquire the economic means with which to make claims on resources, there is only one way to purchase. Business history resides, therefore, at the core of consumer culture history, which itself has reflected and energized the processes of modernization. As scholars have wrestled with explaining consumer cultures, early work mainly examined single factors—manufacturers, advertising agents, urbanization, consumers, law makers, regulators, retailers, social and cultural meanings, and so on. Building on these achievements, historians have begun to move toward more complex and integrative interactive.

Chapter Four examines how advertising engages dance in the promotion of hegemonic ideological notions of social identity i. It looks closely at how advertising reveals cultural ambivalence and relies on nostalgia without memory to allow consumers to re construct a shared cultural history. In a similar way, dance in television advertising serves as a tool for reinforcing neoliberal economic and social theory. Ultimately, I demonstrate how the ads function as spaces of intersection where affect meets ideologies, revealing how advertising reflects, informs, and responds to popular culture, mass media, and consumerism. Consumer Culture and Appropriation

By literary theory we refer not to the meaning of a work of literature but to the theories that reveal what literature can mean. Literary theory is a description of the underlying principles, one might say the tools, by which we attempt to understand literature. All literary interpretation draws on a basis in theory but can serve as a justification for very different kinds of critical activity. It is literary theory that formulates the relationship between author and work; literary theory develops the significance of race, class, and gender for literary study, both from the standpoint of the biography of the author and an analysis of their thematic presence within texts. Literary theory offers varying approaches for understanding the role of historical context in interpretation as well as the relevance of linguistic and unconscious elements of the text.
