Antidiabetic Drugs

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus T2DM is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbance in carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism due to insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction. Epidemiological studies have confirmed a global pandemic of T2DM, which has created an enormous burden on society, with regard to morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditures. Life style modifications are fundamental not only in early stages of disease management but need to be intensified as disease progresses. As our understanding of pathophysiological defects advances, targeting treatment at underlying defects not only enables us to achieve HbA1c goal but also reduces morbidities, mortalities, and progression of the disease. Traditional oral agents like metformin and sulfonylureas have failed to arrest the progression of T2DM. Both genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of T2DM.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, progressive, incompletely understood metabolic condition chiefly characterized by hyperglycemia. Impaired insulin secretion, resistance to tissue actions of insulin, or a combination of both are thought to be the commonest reasons contributing to the pathophysiology of T2DM, a spectrum of disease originally arising from tissue insulin resistance and gradually progressing to a state characterized by complete loss of secretory activity of the beta cells of the pancreas. T2DM is a major contributor to the very large rise in the rate of non-communicable diseases affecting developed as well as developing nations. In this mini review, we endeavor to outline the current management principles, including the spectrum of medications that are currently used for pharmacologic management, for lowering the elevated blood glucose in T2DM. Diabetes mellitus DM is a complex chronic illness associated with a state of high blood glucose level, or hyperglycemia, occurring from deficiencies in insulin secretion, action, or both. The chronic metabolic imbalance associated with this disease puts patients at high risk for long-term macro- and microvascular complications, which if not provided with high quality care, lead to frequent hospitalization and complications, including elevated risk for cardiovascular diseases CVDs 1.

In recent years, with the addition of new medications and medication classifications, pharmacologic therapy for type 2 diabetes has changed dramatically. Nurses need to understand the many pharmacologic agents and combination therapies now in use. This article includes established as well as more recently introduced type 2 diabetes medications, as well as nursing implications regarding patient education and the monitoring of patients for adverse effects.

Drugs used in diabetes treat diabetes mellitus by altering the glucose level in the blood. With the exceptions of insulin , exenatide , liraglutide and pramlintide , all are administered orally and are thus also called oral hypoglycemic agents or oral antihyperglycemic agents. There are different classes of anti-diabetic drugs, and their selection depends on the nature of the diabetes, age and situation of the person, as well as other factors. Diabetes mellitus type 1 is a disease caused by the lack of insulin.
