Situational leadership is a style of management developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard in and enhanced and perfected in the decades since then. It is based primarily on adapting to the immediate situation by considering on how hard the task at hand is, and the maturity of the worker performing the task.

There are many leadership styles that a leader can implement to be more successful in the workplace. One of these styles is situational leadership, which is when a leader adjusts their type of leadership to best suit a particular situation or task. In this article, we discuss the definition of situational leadership, how leaders can implement situational leadership and the advantages and disadvantages of this style of leadership. Advantage of Situational Leadership & Its Characteristics

Some leaders coach others toward success by encouraging independent skill development while offering moments of teaching. Some leaders prefer to roll up their sleeves and get to work with everyone, coaching as they work to promote equality within their team. There are also leaders who take more of a hands-off approach, delegating work to others or observing their development from afar, then stepping in to provide advice only when it becomes necessary. Situational leaders evaluate the situation, the circumstances, and the individuals involved in their approach. Then they choose the most appropriate type of leadership style to use for that given circumstance. Instead of being locked into one general leadership style, all of them are incorporated into their approach. Even though we can all find common ground with other people at some level, humans are unique individuals.

A Situational Leader employs one of four leadership styles that provide him or her with the highest probability of success in every situation they encounter. Those situations are a function of the task that needs to be performed, in conjunction with the task-related ability and willingness of the follower identified to perform it. Based on the objective assessment of those parameters, and with the responsibility of successfully and effectively influencing the follower, the leader responds to the situation with one of four leadership styles. Brandon’s Incredible Story
