The climate crisis is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, and we are not ready for it. While the crisis has many factors that play a role in its exacerbation, there are some that warrant more attention than others. Here are some of the biggest environmental problems of our lifetime.
Global Environmental Protection in the 21st Century
Global environmental problems involve one or more of the following:. Rapid Population Growth. Food Production and Equitable Distribution. Global Warming. Depletion of the Atmospheric Ozone. Acid Precipitation and Air Pollution.
Together with the widening realisation of the problem of poverty, there has been an increasing awareness of the existence of a second global crisis: that of environmental degradation. Concerns about the state of the environment have deep historical roots, but those concerns came to prominence during the s following the publication in of a seminal book by Rachel Carson, Silent Spring , and the emergence of the modern environmentalist movement in some countries Carson Since then, and particularly since the s, considerable scientific efforts have been made to investigate and to document the state of the global environment and the nature of global environmental change. Those efforts have been prompted by widespread concerns that the pace and extent of development in many parts of the world have far outstripped the capacity of natural ecosystems to absorb the impacts of human activities. Numerous environmental changes have been identified as issues of global concern: desertification; the depletion of fuelwood; the destruction of tropical rainforest and rapid declines in forest cover; the modification of coastal ecosystems; the reduced availability and quality of drinking water; the depletion of soil resources; the over-exploitation of fisheries; food shortages; species extinction and the loss of biodiversity; stratospheric ozone depletion; rapidly rising levels of fossil fuel and demand for energy supplies; and climate change.
Climate change is the big environmental problem that humanity will face over the next decade, but it isn't the only one. We'll take a look at some of them — from water shortages and loss of biodiversity to waste management — and discuss the challenges we have ahead of us. This coming decade will be vital when it comes to solving the big environmental issues facing our planet. The third decade of the 21st century has begun and the environmental challenges we have ahead of us, set out in the UN's Agenda for Sustainable Development, are many. This global plan of action adopted in puts forward specific measures to achieve a world that is fairer, more prosperous and more respectful of the environment within ten years. In this regard, the UN itself warns that we are running late, and the question now is whether we still have time to save the planet.
June 1, David Hunter. In the past three decades, protecting the global environment has emerged as one of the major challenges in international relations. No fewer than ten global environmental treaties have been negotiated as well as literally hundreds of regional and bilateral agreements. Governments have also endorsed dozens of comprehensive action plans, most notably the page Agenda 21, which set forth a blueprint for implementing sustainable development. The result is an increasingly complex and rich body of international environmental law and policy. At least on paper, this provides a broad framework for moving toward a more environmentally sustainable future.
For years now, humans have mistreated and contaminated the very environment that sustains them. The list of issues surrounding our environment go on, but there are three major ones that affect the majority of them overall: global warming and climate change; water pollution and ocean acidification; and loss of biodiversity. These three issues need immediate attention and proactive action on our part to ensure conservation of the only habitable planet which we call our home. And, focusing attention on these three major topics will have a ripple effect on a number of smaller environmental issues like inefficient recycling systems and food waste. Global Warming and Climate Change Human activities have made global warming and climate change a global threat. The rising levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases have caused an increase in average global temperatures, extreme weather events, rising sea levels and other negative changes.

Yet its capacity to provide for each one of these individuals is threatened by population growth, climate change, deforestation, collapse of fisheries, desertification, air pollution and scarcity of fresh water. The full extent of our shared global environmental problems goes far beyond the well-publicised challenge of global climate change or global warming. In fact, one of the elements often forgotten is the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment.
Environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Environmentalism , a social and environmental movement , addresses environmental issues through advocacy, education and activism. The amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is possibly above the threshold that can potentially cause climate change.
