Beautiful style and easy to follow By Ken This year I felt compelled to improve my penmanship, and originally found this book at the public library.

What initially drew me to this book is that it taught "chancery italic" which is a style of lettering that I admired. His penmanship is beautiful, and I encourage you to perform an image search for some of his work. The entire book is handwritten in the example lettering that the authors teach.

The authors explain posture, paper position, the origins of calligraphy, fountain pens, and other topics related to penmanship. They also explain why many Americans have terrible handwriting. Their explanation fit my personal experience, and clarified why my penmanship was so bad. To improve my penmanship, I practiced about 15 minutes per day for a couple of weeks, and saw dramatic improvement.

To practice, I purchased a Canson Pro Layout Marker Pad very nice tracing paper and then traced the letters for minutes. It was that easy. An example of my Basic Italic handwriting is attached. This book gave me the results I was seeking. Well it wasn't published 40 years ago, but you get the idea.

My handwriting had gotten to the point that even I could not read it. I decided to take up Italic handwriting and purchased this book. I realize now that it is a classic. All I know is that it has really helped me write better. I would strongly suggest that all parents purchase this book and have their children start to learn italic handwriting.

They will be glad they did. Easy to Follow and Learn By Dr. T This book is great for improving handwriting and learning calligraphy for any age. This style conforms to the natural movements of the hands and is easy to learn.

If one had to select a single word to describe Lloyd J. Although he was an excellent calligrapher, certainly one of the best in the country, he was a teacher first, able to merge beautiful letter forms into his vision of the world, successfully and permanently influencing his students, and providing them with part of his vision. Writing originates all the way back to 30, years ago in the Paleolithic Era when human beings began making representations of the things around them. Although these paintings pictures are not necessarily writing in a formal sense, they are markings that express meaning. Actual writing did not emerge until about BCE in a number of different cultures, such as with the Phoenicians and their set of abstract symbols that represented nothing more than the sounds of speech Calderhead and Cohen 6. Eventually, writing evolved into complex sets of symbols that represented words of many different languages. As these alphabets evolved and were used over the years, writing eventually became to be viewed as an art form. Because of its importance in the graphic arts, calligraphy is a natural field of study for a graphic designer. The purpose of this directed study was to learn two contrasting calligraphic alphabets; to conduct research on one of the greatest calligraphic masterpieces; and to complete two calligraphic projects that exhibit the insular majuscule alphabet and the italic alphabet.

Lloyd Reynolds is an iconic figure in Pacific Northwest calligraphy. He not only inspired generations of students, but he also strongly influenced the aesthetics of Portland and the spread of calligraphy and fine handwriting throughout the country. His passion was to introduce beautiful handwriting to everyone. Everyone writes, he said, and that writing should be readable and beautiful. Born in in Bemidji, Minnesota, Reynolds' family moved to Portland when he was twelve. Reed College hired Reynolds as an instructor in to teach creative writing and English.
