Style and idea : selected writings of Arnold Schoenberg

The Idea of Music pp Cite as. Arnold Schoenberg was a strange man. A mass of odd contradictions and queer promptings lurk in the shadow of his heroic image as Scott-of-the-Antarctic of modern music.

His importance and even greatness are on a certain level indisputable, but their precise extent relates far more clearly than is often understood to the dimensions of this shadow, which falls nowhere more strikingly than across his writings.

An Essay by Schoenberg

Several of the essays now composing Style and ldea were originally written in German. In translating these, I have, at the author's wish, adhered as literally to the original style as Engtish usage allows. Thus there should be a certain con- sistency of expression between these and the later essays which were written in English but which still bear the earmarks of Schoenberg's individual Ger- man sfle. Schoenberg himself has elucidated his attitude towards his own manner of writing in English as follows: ". I do not plan to hide the fact that I am not born in this language and I do not want to parade adorned by stylistic merits of another person.
