The Shapiro reaction or tosylhydrazone decomposition is an organic reaction in which a ketone or aldehyde is converted to an alkene through an intermediate hydrazone in the presence of 2 equivalents of organolithium reagent. Shapiro in In a prelude to the actual Shapiro reaction, a ketone or an aldehyde 1 is reacted with p -toluenesulfonylhydrazide [6] 2 to form a p -toluenesulfonylhydrazone or tosylhydrazone which is a hydrazone 3. The carbanion then undergoes an elimination reaction producing a carbon—carbon double bond and ejecting the tosyl anion, forming a diazonium anion 6. This diazonium anion is then lost as molecular nitrogen resulting in a vinyllithium species 7 , which can then be reacted with various electrophiles , including simple neutralization with water or an acid 8. The position of the alkene in the product is controlled by the site of deprotonation by the organolithium base. In general, the kinetically favored, less substituted site of differentially substituted tosylhydrazones is deprotonated selectively, leading to the less substituted vinyllithium intermediate.

Name reactions honor the discoverers of groundbreaking chemical reactions or refinements of earlier known transformations in the way that many scientists have their names attached to an effect or a phenomenon, an equation, a constant, etc. In some cases, the person whose name is associated with the reaction was not the first to discover the reaction, but instead managed to popularize it.

After the series of posts on Alcohols, I put together a large PDF that included the reactions of alcohols, alkenes, alkanes, alkynes, and alkyl halides on a large sheet. I was going to add our recent reactions of organometallics to this page, but it just got too unruly. Hope you find it useful! Here it is.

Rearrangement Reactions 1 — Hydride Shifts. The previous four posts on acid-base , substitution , addition , and elimination covered the 4 main reactions in organic chemistry I. They will be rearrangements, radical substitution, and cleavage oxidative cleavage. As with everything in this series, the point is not to understand why just yet, but to be able to see from the diagrams what bonds are broken and formed. You need to understand how to read line diagrams.
