Sometimes referred to as the " Birdman of India ", Salim Ali was the first Indian to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and wrote several bird books that popularized ornithology in India. He became a key figure behind the Bombay Natural History Society after and used his personal influence to garner government support for the organisation, create the Bharatpur bird sanctuary Keoladeo National Park and prevent the destruction of what is now the Silent Valley National Park. Along with Sidney Dillon Ripley he wrote the landmark ten volume Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan , a second edition of which was completed after his death. Salim Ali was born into a Sulaimani Bohra family in Bombay, the ninth and youngest child of Moizuddin. His father died when he was a year old and his mother Zeenat-un-nissa died when he was three. Along with his siblings, Ali was brought up by his maternal uncle, Amiruddin Tyabji, and childless aunt, Hamida Begum, in a middle-class household in Khetwadi, Mumbai.

This illustrated checklist covers South Asia Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka , a region with great habitat diversity which is especially rich in large mammalian life and attracts numerous wildlife watchers. Although not a traditional Field Guide, this book will equip both residents and visitors to the region with an easy-to-use resource that will allow them to quickly learn about the species of mammals known to occur in the area. This book is part of the Lynx Illustrated Checklists collection created from the vast wealth of data, illustrations and maps compiled for the Handbook of the Mammals of the Word series, that has been distilled into useful and portable books for your visit to a specific destination. Having everything listed in one book makes it a whole lot easier to identify smaller species in particular, or at least narrow down the range of possibilities. Until now, trying to ID a Nepalese mouse or a Bhutanese bat would mean hours of time on Google, or flicking backwards and forwards through the Handbook of Mammals of the World. You can download your own checklist of mammals to accompany the book when you buy one.
