In communities, health is a product of many factors, and many segments of the community have the potential to contribute to and share responsibility for its protection and improvement. Changes in public policy, in public- and private-sector roles in health and health care, and in public expectations are presenting opportunities and challenges for communities addressing both the overall health status of the population and more specific health issues. Performance monitoring can be used as a tool to assess activities in many sectors and to promote collaboration and accountability in working toward better health for the whole community, especially within the framework of a community-based health improvement process.

The technology necessary for effective, innovative application of information technology to public health practice is available today at very reasonable costs. The barrier to the widespread application of such technology is that few public health professionals have received any formal training in informatics, and most lack even a basic understanding of the nature and purpose of informatics as a discipline. Although the discipline of public health informatics has much in common with other informatics specialty areas, it differs from them in several ways. These include 1 a focus on applications of information science and technology that promote the health of populations, rather than of individuals; 2 a focus on disease prevention, rather than treatment; 3 a focus on preventive intervention at all vulnerable points in the causal chains leading to disease, injury, or disability; and 4 operation within a governmental, rather than a private, context. Drivers of change forcing public health professionals to be conversant with the development, use, and strategic importance of computerized health information systems include public health reform, the growth in managed care, and the information technology revolution.

On an almost daily basis, people read or hear about new drug discoveries and adverse reactions supposedly caused by drugs on the market. Sometimes panic sets in because a drug seems to be responsible for the death of some of its users, but how can people evaluate what they read and hear? How are adverse reactions and side effects studied and measured? To answer these questions and many others about medications and drugs used in society, data and information are gathered and analyzed through pharmacoepidemiological study. In this book, the principles and practice of pharmacoepidemiology are presented and discussed in the contexts of epidemiology and public health.

Other important sub-fields include environmental health , community health , behavioral health , health economics , public policy , mental health , health education , health politics , occupational safety , disability , gender issues in health, and sexual and reproductive health.

Public health and community health professionals may not work with patients directly, but they play an important role in creating healthcare plans and awareness campaigns. Previous healthcare experience can be an asset in these careers, but healthcare workers interested in public health or community health should consider an advanced degree if they want to succeed in one of these fields.

Like community mental health care itself, the book is multidisciplinary and pluralistic.
